Hips Don't Lie

Welcome to day 10, the final day, of our #ElevatedSocialDistancing challenge. Today, Rachel closes us out with some killer drills to work on our hips! Because who doesn't love some work on the hips!

Hip-openers are some of the most popular and requested types of asanas {and no doubt, your yoga teacher's favorite thing to teach}. They bring release to areas of tightness that many people suffer from. There are over 20 muscles that work across the hips, such as adductors in the inner thighs, abductors in the outer thighs, hip flexors and lateral rotators, so it’s super important to give these a lot of attention. Any movement that stretches these muscles is a hip opener, but there are certain poses that give these a deeper release.

So why is this important?

If you have tight hips, it not only can affect your ability to get into certain yoga poses but can also affect your day to day life. Tight hips can bring added challenges from everything such as getting into certain yoga asanas to bending over to pick something up. It can also cause over-use of the spine, leading to back problems and pain. The hips are also a point in the body where negativity and pent-up emotions are often stored. That said, working on your hips regularly can be great for both the body and the mind!

Get Started

Today, Charley gives us some amazing drills to help strengthen the hips and begin to release tension. Complete each of these drills, aiming to do 5-10 of each, on each side! Yes, that's right! We're ending the last day of this challenge with a bang!

Hip Drills:

  • Seated Wide Legged Forward Fold

  • Seated Wide Legged Forward Fold Slides

  • Seated Leg Lifts

  • Pigeon Pose Entrances + Exits

  • Bridge Walkouts / Slides

  • Figure 4 Stretches
